Empowering Competitiveness in the Design of Rowing Boats using AI and HPC

SECTOR: University
TECHNOLOGY USED: HPC, CFD, OpenFOAM
COUNTRY: Italy

Short description of the business experiment

The design of rowing boats is a highly demanding task and can be greatly assisted by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and, in particular, HPC, to reduce the excessive cost of the design process. This is where Filippi Boats, a well-established designer and manufacturer of Olympic and Paralympic rowing boats, focuses its efforts.

Through the proposed work, Filippi's primary goal is to raise performance standards for Paralympic athletes by counterbalancing unavoidable differences due to individual disabilities. This requires extensive and precise customisation of the boats to meet specific demands and maintain a competitive edge.

To this end, Filippi needs to upgrade its CFD-based design workflow by adopting modern CFD analysis tools, optimisation methods, and AI, fully exploiting HPC to establish a design process that is both effective and efficient.
